TEACHING NOTES - Barnesy

Australians like to invent things. There are many famous Australians whose inventions have changed the way that people live all over the world!
Lots of Australian inventions start in the backyard shed. One such 'shed inventor' was a South Australian man called Alfred Hannaford (1890-1969.) As a young boy he worked on his family farm. Pottering away in his shed, he made his first invention: a piece of farming equipment to harvest wheat. Guess what? His invention was made out of an old piece of wood - a railway sleeper! From then on, Alfred was inspired to invent all sorts of farm machinery. His inventions were sold to farmers and made farming easier for future generations.
When Alfred died, he left some of the money he made from his inventions to The University of Adelaide so that students can have what they need to invent things.
